Dr. Ted Myatt and Taeko Minegishi, MS, presented the research related to assessing exposure to radiation and radon from granite countertops in a poster and podium presentation, respectively. The research was funded by the Marble Institute of America’s Truth About Granite Fund. Healthy Buildings 2009 is a premier scientific conference bringing together research scientists, engineers, architects and policy makers from all over the world. More than 500 scientific papers were presented at the conference.

During the allotted time, the EH&E scientists presented the research and fielded questions from the audience. Also, during the course of the remainder of the conference, the EH&E scientists continued to discuss the work with other interested scientists. Three repeated themes arose in questions/comments: 1) Questions regarding how this research came about (i.e., the back story), 2) Comments regarding the low annual radiation exposure and how this compares to other sources of background radiation (e.g., flying on an airplane across the country), and 3) General interest in the technical aspects of the method of measuring radon flux designed by EH&E.
